The Illinois Legislature failed to extend the Invest in Kids program last week, bringing to a bitter end a program that has allowed 9,600 students from low income families to attend private school.

According to the Illinois Policy Institute, Illinois voters support the program by a 3-1 margin.

Private schools in the state are scrambling to help families who have come to depend on the scholarships.

School choice advocates have vowed to continue the fight.
